City Buzz at Home: “Black Rust” Apartments in Kaunas
November 21, 2025

The “Black Rust” apartments in the center of Kaunas are an interior project created by our studio for a young couple who boldly decided to invite the city’s buzz into their home. This project reflects a modern approach to urban living, where private spaces become not only a refuge but also an extension of the city’s rhythm.

The apartment’s layout surprises from the very first step inside. A corridor naturally divides the home into two zones: on the right – darker, more restful spaces, and on the left – the brighter kitchen and living area. The main highlight here is the kitchen island with six chairs, crowned by a handmade industrial-style lamp. It is a place to gather – to cook, connect, or simply enjoy the city panorama.

The interior is shaped by bold design choices: bronze-glass kitchen elements with backlighting subtly balance the rust-effect finishes; dark gray ceilings with concealed lighting give the space depth; while black brick, terracotta fabric sofas, and open metal shelving bring in an urban character. In the bathroom, a striking textured rock wall becomes a standout decorative feature, while the corridor catches the eye with antique, aged-mirror facades.

These details recreate the city’s dynamic spirit within the interior while at the same time fostering a cozy, harmonious, and youthful home. It is a story about how architecture can transfer the atmosphere of the city into a personal space without losing comfort and warmth.

The project participated in the interior architecture competition “My Space 2024”, organized for the tenth time by Lrytas together with the Lithuanian Architects’ Association. Lithuanian works were evaluated by an international jury of architects, with architectural quality set as the main criterion.
